Bamboo works...
A group project with the artisans of West Bengal in which we developed baskets, fences, bookmarks, bags and a lamp. The technique of joinery within bamboo and weaving of split the bamboo is explored. Using the skills of the artisans with a strategic work plan, fine quality products were developed, focusing domestic and export market.
Developed a range of bookmarks out of the wastage of bamboo split weaving. Besides this, they even act as design swatches for clients who come to exhibitions. Another interesting utility is that these can be souvenirs or a remembrance of the craft.
The toy box was developed keeping in mind packaging and light weight. It is a grid of the cube when kept flat and tie- knots have been given to make it a proper cubical box. Its easy to store and because of the softness of the material, it is safe for children to use.
The lamp is all about geometry. It incorporated least amount of material, it’s actually made out of leftovers of bamboo and bamboo split. It hangs on a tilted axis and that’s what makes it visually appealing. Along with this, the shadow that it creates is like a woven pattern on the wall.
Designed fences in bamboo which can easily be transported and packaged. The crisscross fence has half cut bamboos attached with nuts. It can be stretched or compressed to the desired height.
The furl fence is made of one inch bamboo and are inter-connected with an elastic wire. The fence can be rolled and tied up.
